Natalie in one of her first endeavors for CBS News, was called upon to explore a decades-old murder in Colorado for 48 Hours. Traveling through the woods and snow and out through the bitter, cold, and lonely crevices of Colorado, and giving her the very simple task and mastering a 40-year-old case in a few weeks.

On Saturday, Morales will tell viewers about, Annette Schnee aged 21 and Bobbie Jo Oberholtzer aged 29, near the ski resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The case went cold until investigators and some of them have been trying to solve it for years and were able to get a DNA match from evidence through a public genealogy database. Investigators learned that the killer was rescued by the local fire chief from a snow-covered mountain pass the same night he dumped the bodies of the two women.

The Colorado case came to the attention of producers in 48 Hours in the early spring of 2021, and the trial date set in the fall made it even more interesting. “When it goes to trial is around the time when we have access to Natalie, and it all comes together,” he said, noting that he’ll take as much of Natalie as I can get, for the show, though he’ll have to negotiate with other producers who may also want to take Natalie’s time.

Natalie doesn’t have a firm goal of how many CBS News articles she might do per year or per day, but notes that she is in constant dialog with many producers about what might be possible on The Talk has a lull around the holidays that might open a window of time for her. Natalie said she has done stories where people feel that “justice will never happen for them”, but this investigation shows the benefits of a sustained effort to solve a case. If people put in the work and give it a little time, with the right technology, it can happen, she added.
